Fruit shape mutants

Allometry is an important parameter in developmental studies. Tomato fruit shape mutants represent a good opportunity to study the control of differential growth rates in different parts of the ovary, and the signaling pathways that contributes to allometric interactions. Tomato fruit shape mutants carry alterations in genes coding for molecules which repress or induce cell division and expansion in different parts of carpels. Moreover, mutations in transcription factors controlling meristem size (WUSCHEL, YABBY) have an impact in the number of carpels and thus fruit shape.
